The panic room- opening sequence analysis

camera- The opening credits of the film are laid over  establishing shots of the city of Manhattan, this sets the location of the film which is essential in the first five minutes of any film.

-In the house there are camera shots through the spindles of the staircase which hints towards use of voyeurism, as someone is watching or following the up the staircase

-A point of view shot is used when they are entering the empty room and is then panned form left to right as if the camera was looking around. By using this sequence of camera shots and angles it gives the impression that there could be something in the room that the audience doesnt know about or that they are looking for something.

editing- a motivated cut is used, to introduce the main female character. Her voice is heard whilst the final credits are rolling and then a cut is used to show the speaking character, this almost helps the audience farmiliarise themseles with the character before we see what she looks like.

Introducing lead characters is an important feature of the opening 5mins of any film.

mise en scene- the first 2-3mins of the film is shown in quite bright high key lighting, with the setting being outside. This indicates to the audience that it is a pleasant day and that everything is seemingly normal. The lighting then changes to more low key when entering the house. This creates a more sinister atmosphere and also gives the impression that there maybe something hiding in the house.

- The house also is very empty suggesting that it hasn't been lived in for a while and could pose the question of why it hasn't been lived in for a while, especially since it is a very large house with a large garden in the middle of Manhattan

sound- the sinister incidental music immediately suggests that something is not right or is not as it seems, it also helps to build tension, important in a thriller film

-the echoes of the dialogue suggests emptiness, but then taken with all the other techniques used tells the audience that maybe there is something in the emptiness

-also the non diegetic elevator noise suggests that maybe there is something wrong with the elevator and is it quite a loud and unhealthy noise.
