Audience research- mis-en-scene

Location:
From my research I found that location has a massive effect on thriller films as a whole. People said that they normally watch thrillers that have mostly an outside location. They then went on to say that they preferred to have a balance of both inside and outside shots. I found that the setting always gives ideas about the nature of the film.

Costume and make up:
I asked people whether they thought costume and make up had a big part in a film and they said yes because it gives the viewer a clear idea of the time period it was set in and gave indications as to their background. An example thriller given was Shutter island because although the film tells the viewer of what time period it is, there are other hints as to the time period it is set in. The characters wore fairly smart and traditional suits which showed that they came from a respectable background and had good careers.
People also preferred a realistic setting because they feel like they are a part of it almost which draws them in more and automatically finds the thriller film more interesting. This is a possible thriller convention in which to use in our thriller opening as it was brought up on various occasions which shows that realistic settings have a big part in this genre.

Lighting:
Many people said that they liked either a natural lighting to seem more realistic or a low lighting onto people talking and a dull lighting overall because it adds to the suspense to the film. Also the use of special lighting effects shadows was mentioned- they said that they like shadows in thrillers because they feel like someone is being followed which shows hat something bad is definitely going to happen.

All of these aspects are going to be taken into consideration as we want to make a thriller opening that will definitely appeal to our target audience and include things that they want to see or things that work in thrillers.
